Committee formed to review Bangladesh Bank reserve theft

The government has established a high-level committee, chaired by law adviser Asif Nazrul, to review the 2016 Bangladesh Bank reserve theft.

A notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Wednesday outlined the committee’s composition and its responsibilities.

The committee members included power, energy and mineral resources adviser Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, special assistant to the ministry of posts, telecommunications and information technology Fayez Ahmed Taiyab, Bangladesh Bank governor Ahsan H Mansur, Biman Bangladesh Airlines director Ali Ashfaq, and Rupali Bank PLC chairman Md Nazrul Huda.

The committee was tasked with evaluating the progress of the investigation into the reserve theft case in 2016 and reviewing the actions taken by the government.

Additionally, it aimed to determine accountability for the incident and provide recommendations to prevent such occurrences in the future.

According to the notification, the committee was required to submit its recommendations within three months of its formation.

The Financial Institutions Division was assigned to provide secretarial assistance to facilitate the committee’s work.

It was also granted the authority to co-opt additional members if necessary.
