Bangladesh celebrates Eid-ul-Fitr

Bangladesh marked Eid-ul-Fitr on Friday with widespread celebration, as millions gathered for prayers and festivities in an atmosphere of devotion and joy.

The main congregation in the capital took place at the Jatiya Eidgah, located near the High Court, where worshippers assembled from early morning.

The prayers, held at 8:30am, were led by Mufti Mohammad Abdul Malek, khatib of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.

Following the two obligatory rakats, a khutba was delivered, after which congregants embraced and exchanged greetings.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin and prime minister Tarique Rahman joined the Dhaka gathering, offering prayers alongside thousands of devotees.

Special supplications were made seeking peace, prosperity and unity for Bangladesh and the wider Muslim world.

Across the country, mosques and open grounds hosted similar congregations.

One of the largest assemblies took place at the Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj, where thousands participated under heightened security arrangements.

Religious observances were accompanied by a festive atmosphere.

Streets and road medians in major cities were decorated with national flags and banners inscribed with Eid greetings in Bangla and Arabic.

Broadcast media, including state-run Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar, aired special programmes to mark the occasion.

Authorities also arranged improved meals at public institutions such as hospitals, orphanages, welfare centres and prisons to ensure wider participation in the celebrations.

In separate messages, the president, prime minister and opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman conveyed their greetings to citizens, urging unity and compassion.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Bangladesh Police and the Rapid Action Battalion, maintained reinforced security nationwide to ensure peaceful observance of the festival.
