Production was suspended in over 100 readymade garment (RMG) factories on Monday, due to labor unrest in the Ashulia and Gazipur industrial areas.

More than 85 of these factories declared a general holiday to mitigate potential incidents related to the unrest.

According to the industrial police, while the 85 factories were officially closed, the remaining factories stayed open for production.

However, workers at approximately 10 of these factories left their workplaces shortly after arriving.

Ashulia Industrial Police Superintendent Mohammad Sarowar Alam said that workers held demonstrations inside some factory premises and staged processions on the roads to express their demands.

Despite these actions, no roads in the Ashulia area were blocked on Monday.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association said that about 88 factories, including major names such as Sharmin, Hameem, Sterling, Ananta, and Windy Groups, declared a holiday with pay.

Of these, around 65 are located in Savar, Ashulia, and Zirani, while the remaining factories are in Gazipur.

In Gazipur, Industrial Police Superintendent Mohammad Sarwar Alam said that 10 to 12 RMG factories experienced halted production due to the unrest.
