BGMEA urges streamlined customs procedures for RMG sector

A delegation from Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), headed by its president S M Mannan Kochi on Wednesday met with the commissioner of Chattogram custom house Mohammad Fyzur Rahman to discuss customs issues in the readymade garment sector.

They focused on documentation problems and HS Code classifications affecting operations.

BGMEA president emphasised simplifying customs procedures to facilitate smoother RMG services, highlighting the impact of customs challenges on costs and delays.

He stressed the need to reduce lead times for global market competitiveness and called for government support for sustainable RMG growth.

Kochi condemned money laundering in exports, urging punishment for those harming the economy.

He called on the commissioner to penalize those obstructing exports and harassing exporters, urging prompt action to streamline RMG services.

The delegation urged customs authorities to address these issues promptly for operational efficiency.

The commissioner acknowledged the RMG industry’s significance and pledged cooperation to address concerns and foster industry growth.

BGMEA First Vice President Syed Nazrul Islam, Senior Vice President Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, Vice President (Finance) Md Nasir Uddin, Vice Presidents Abdullah Hil Rakib and Rakibul Alam Chowdhury, and Directors Shovon Islam were present at the meeting.
