Workers of Roar Fashion Ltd blocked the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) building in Uttara on Monday, demanding unpaid wages and other benefits.
On the same day, another group of workers from TNZ Group staged a protest in the Paltan area, blocking roads in the afternoon to press for their wage dues and festival allowances ahead of Eid.
According to sources at BGMEA, more than 200 workers of Roar Fashion Ltd prevented entry and exit from the building since morning, disrupting the trade body’s daily activities.
Sources said workers stayed in front of the BGMEA building from Sunday night and BGMEA officials came out with assistance of Industrial Police.
Latter, on Monday many BGMEA officials could not enter the building.
Law enforcing agencies sources said the factory faced financial crisis with the change of political situation resulting irregular wage payments and latter on January factory authority announced laid off of the factory.
Workers claimed they owed January payment and other lawful benefits.
Meantime, workers of TNZ Group also staged demonstration infront of Srama Bhaban in the city demanding three months wages and festival allowances.
They staged demonstration and blocked Srama Bhaban last night too and latter at night at around 10:00 pm allowed its officials to come out after assurance from law enforcing agencies including Army to discuss the issues with government high ups.
According to data, some 31 out of 2107 BGMEA member factories are yet to pay February wages until Monday while one unit did not pay January wages.
About 1763 factories paid festival allowance while some 84 units paid March wages partially or fully based on discussion with their respective workers.
