Submarine cable outage sparks internet disruption in Bangladesh

SEA-ME-WE 5, Bangladesh’s secondary submarine cable overseen by Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC, suffered a breakdown late Friday night, triggering extensive internet disruptions across Bangladesh.

According to a press release issued by BSCPLC on Saturday, the western side of the SMW-5 cable, located 440 kilometers from Singapore, suddenly disconnected around 12:00 AM, resulting in the closure of all Kuakata-Singapore-bound traffic over the cable.

Efforts are underway to quickly repair the cable and restore connectivity, as stated in the release by the SMW-5 consortium.

In the interim, internet services in the country are being provided through the SMW-4 submarine cable and ITC facilities in Cox’s Bazar.

A significant amount of bandwidth isolated from SMW-5 is being redirected to SMW-4 cables.

However, users may experience slow internet speeds until the SMW-5 submarine cable is fully repaired and operational.

The BSCPLC authorities sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to customers during this temporary disruption.
