Minimum wage for yurvedic industry workers proposed at Tk 11,000

The minimum wages for workers and employees in the ayurvedic industry are set to increase after 12 years, with the minimum wage board finalizing a draft proposal recommending a minimum monthly pay of Tk 11,000 for sector workers.

The proposal, published in a gazette notification on June 23, invites written objections or suggestions from stakeholders within 14 days.

The last review of minimum wages in the ayurvedic industry occurred in 2009, setting the gross minimum monthly pay at Tk 4,350.

The labor ministry formed the board to review wages in June 2020, appointing Hamdard Laboratories (Waqf) Bangladesh director Sheeri Farhad and Sadhona Oushodhaloy Ltd worker Chandrajit Burmon as representatives.

However, subsequent changes led to Hamdard Laboratories (Waqf) Bangladesh deputy director Md Mizanur Rahman and Sadhona Oushodhaloy Ltd worker Binod Chandra Bhowmik replacing them.

Bangladesh Ayurvedic Medicine Manufacturers Association secretary general Mizanur Rahman expressed awareness of the wage board’s recommendation but criticized the exclusion of their trade body from the process.

He questioned the appointment of an ineligible company employee as an owners’ representative on the board.

Labour ministry additional secretary Md Jahangir Hossain clarified that the board was formed in 2020 and noted no complaint from the trade association regarding the owners’ representative.

He assured the ministry would address any objections filed by the association.

According to the gazette notification, the board’s proposal includes six worker categories with varying minimum monthly wages.

For highly-skilled workers, the proposal suggests Tk 19,250, incorporating basic pay, house rent, medical, and travel allowances. Skilled-1 workers are proposed at Tk 17,000, skilled-2 at Tk 14,600, semi-skilled-1 at Tk 13,100, semi-skilled-2 at Tk 12,200, and unskilled workers at Tk 11,000.

Apprentice workers and employees are suggested to receive Tk 8,000 monthly.

Sector leaders estimated over one hundred ayurvedic medicine manufacturers’ nationwide employing approximately 30,000 workers and employees.
