Inflation drops to 8.48 per cent, lowest in 27 months

Inflation in Bangladesh has dropped below 9 per cent for the first time in 27 months, according to data released on July 7 by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

The point-to-point inflation rate for June 2025 fell to 8.48 per cent, down from 9.05 per cent recorded in May. Inflation has remained above the 9 per cent threshold since March 2023.

During this period, the highest inflation rate was 11.66 per cent, recorded in July 2024.

The latest figures show that food inflation declined to 7.39 per cent in June, from 8.59 per cent in May, while non-food inflation edged down slightly to 9.37 per cent from 9.42 per cent.

Despite this improvement, the government’s target of maintaining an average inflation rate of 6.5 per cent for the fiscal year 2024–25 was not met.

According to BBS calculations, average inflation between July 2024 and June 2025 stood at 10.03 per cent.

Commenting on the data, Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, said in a social media statement, ‘As a result of the well-considered policies and strategies of the interim government, inflation is falling rapidly. The point-to-point inflation for June is 8.48 per cent, which is two percentage points lower than in August 2024.’

‘Food inflation has dropped significantly to 7.39 per cent, the lowest in the past two years. Non-food inflation has also begun to decline and is expected to fall further in the coming days,’ he added.
