The government has decided to provide a loan of Tk 60 crore to Beximco Group to pay workers’ wages for October.
Workers from Beximco Industrial Park have been protesting for four days, blocking roads in the Sarabo area of Gazipur metropolis, to demand overdue wages.
According to sources, during a meeting held with Beximco Group officials at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday, the Ministry of Labour and Employment and the Finance Division of the Ministry of Finance jointly decided to extend the loan to settle the outstanding wages.
Confirming the decision, Labour Secretary AHM Shafiquzzaman said that the loan aims to pay the workers’ wages for the previous month and resolve the ongoing labour unrest.
He urged workers to return to their jobs immediately to maintain law and order and ensure normal production across all factories in the Ashulia-Chandra area.
A senior official from Beximco Group said that the Ministry of Labour will provide Tk 10 crore, while the Finance Division will contribute Tk 50 crore as a loan.
There are some procedures to complete before receiving the funds, which may take one to two days, he said.
The official said that Tk 80 crore was required to pay all workers, and the group would arrange the remaining Tk 20 crore from its own resources.
Around 40,000 workers are employed across the 24 factories of Beximco Industrial Park.
