Afroza Shahin appointed new managing director of TEAM Group

Afroza Shahin has been appointed as the new managing director of TEAM Group following the tragic passing of its founder and former managing director, Abdullah Hil Rakib.

In a statement on social media on Monday, the board of directors announced the appointment of the late MD’s wife to the leadership role.

On June 8, Abdullah Hil Rakib and his close friend Captain Md Saifuzzaman Guddu, a senior pilot at Biman Bangladesh Airlines, died in a boating accident in Canada.

Having stood by her husband’s side, Afroza Shahin has been closely involved in the leadership and strategic direction of TEAM Group for several years.

Afroza Shahin is an MBBS graduate from Sir Salimullah Medical College (2001) and later completed postgraduate training at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

She married Abdullah Hil Rakib in 1999.

Since the founding of TEAM Group, she has served as a board director and has also been managing director of the group’s lifestyle fashion brand, Twelve Clothing.

At a recent board meeting, the couple’s children — Mahir Daiyan and Lamia Tabassum — were also confirmed as board members.

Team Group began operations in garments and textiles in 2009 with three manufacturing units.

The group evolved into a major RMG conglomerate comprising six apparel and backward linkage factories: Brothers Fashion Limited, 4A Yarn Dyeing Limited, Gramtech Limited, South End Sweaters, Mars Stitch Limited, and CBM Limited.

Beyond textiles, Rakib expanded his business ventures into pharmaceuticals, information technology, real estate and retail.

Team Group is regarded as a trendsetter in sustainable and responsible business practices in Bangladesh, with one LEED Gold-certified factory and two more registered with the US Green Building Council for potential LEED Platinum certification.

Rakib served in various leadership roles at BGMEA from 2013 to 2024, including as Director, vice-president, and senior vice-president.

He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology, where he actively promoted stronger industry-academia partnerships.
