Govt to review wages for glass and silicate industry workers

The government has launched an initiative to review the minimum monthly wages for workers in the glass and silicate industries.

The move came in line with the labour act as the wages for the sector were last reviewed six years ago in 2019.

The minimum monthly wages for the industry were fixed at Tk 8,500 in 2019 which was Tk 5000 in 2011, according to officials.

The labour ministry on March 16 issued a gazette notification appointing the representatives from workers and owners to the minimum wage board.

According to the gazette notification, the labour ministry appointed Md Shamsuddin Bhuiyan, senior deputy general manager (head of HR) of PHP family, as the employers’ representative and Nazmul Alam, junior security inspector of PHP Float Glass Industries Ltd, as the workers’ representative to the wage board.

The wage board consists of a chairman, one independent member, one permanent representative each from employers and workers and one temporary representative each from the employers and workers.

The temporary representatives from the employers and workers have been selected from the respective industries.
