Three more factories earn LEED certification, taking Bangladesh’s total to 253

The number of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified factories in Bangladesh has risen to 253, following the recent certification of three additional factory units.

Among the certified factories, 105 have achieved platinum status, 132 hold gold ratings, 12 are silver-rated, and four are classified as certified, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association data showed.

LEED certification is awarded by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), recognising buildings for their excellence in energy efficiency and environmental performance.

In July, Tangail-based Comfit Rainbow Dyeing and Finishing Ltd was awarded a gold certificate under the LEED O+M: Existing Building v4.1 rating system, with a score of 75.

Additionally, two units of Saiham Cotton Mills Limited, located in Habiganj, received silver certification under the LEED BD+C: New Construction v4 system, each scoring 58.

Bangladesh now hosts 68 of the world’s top 100 LEED-certified factories—including nine of the top 10 and 18 of the top 20—highlighting the country’s growing leadership in sustainable industrial practices.

Industry sources report that 550 more factories in Bangladesh are currently awaiting LEED certification, reflecting strong momentum in green building initiatives. Bangladeshi factories began receiving LEED certification in 2011.

The USGBC evaluates factories based on criteria such as transformation performance, energy efficiency, and water and waste management. Platinum is the highest rating, followed by gold and silver.

This continued progress in green certification is expected to attract increased international investment and reinforce Bangladesh’s reputation as a global hub for sustainable manufacturing.
