Govt withdraws import duties on rice to stabilise prices

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has removed all import and regulatory duties on rice to bolster food security and stabilise prices of the staple food in the local market.

To this end, the revenue authority issued a Statutory Regulatory Order (SRO) on Thursday.

Previously, the Directorate of Food submitted a report to the Ministry of Food detailing the country’s overall rice stocks.

The Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission (BTTC) also provided reports to the Ministries of Food and Commerce, as well as to the NBR, on the prevailing rice price situation.

Both reports recommended removing all import duties on rice to encourage imports.

On October 20, the NBR had reduced import duties from 62.5 percent to 25 percent to help regulate the local rice market.
