Dhaka urges Thimphu to reduce tourist fees

Dhaka has recently called upon Thimphu to consider reducing its Sustainable Development Fees for tourists from Bangladesh during the 3rd Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between Bangladesh and Bhutan.

The FOC, led by Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen and his Bhutanese counterpart Pema Choden, convened in Thimphu, as outlined in a press release from the foreign ministry.

In response to Bangladesh’s request, the Bhutanese delegation pledged to positively consider reducing fees for Bangladeshi tourists, aiming to bolster tourism and enhance people-to-people exchanges.

The FOC agenda encompassed discussions on the entire spectrum of bilateral relations. Both foreign secretaries expressed contentment with the robust bilateral ties between Bangladesh and Bhutan.

They deliberated on key areas of mutual interest, with a focus on fostering cooperation across various sectors, notably trade and commerce, healthcare, investment, connectivity, energy, tourism, culture, and education.

Momen urged Bhutan to take steps towards rejoining the BBIN MVA framework, aiming to foster prosperity through increased people-to-people interactions.

Additionally, both sides explored strategies for expediting the implementation of decisions and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) inked during the recent visit of the King of Bhutan to Bangladesh.

Pema Choden highlighted the need to tap into unexplored potential in economic, cultural, and educational realms, proposing the establishment of meaningful collaborative ties.

She expressed Bhutan’s desire for expanded trade and investment cooperation with Bangladesh, emphasizing the importance of concluding pending agreements and MoUs.

The Bhutanese Foreign Secretary underscored the significance of both governmental and private-level exchanges between the two nations.

Regional issues of mutual concern were also deliberated upon, with optimism expressed for continued efforts to revitalize the SAARC and BIMSTEC processes.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary also met with Lyonpo D N Dhungyel, Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Royal Government of Bhutan, discussing various mutual interests, including trade and investment, the establishment of a special economic zone in Kurigram, cooperation in the power sector, and advancements in health and education, alongside regional cooperation.

Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen attended the National Day Reception hosted by the Bangladesh embassy in Bhutan as a Special Guest, where he inspected the progress of the ongoing construction of the Chancery and Residence Construction project of the Bangladesh embassy in Thimphu.
