The leading apparel trade organisation, BGMEA, has urged its members to promptly examine factory buildings for any structural weaknesses following the November 21 earthquake, warning of potential aftershocks and emphasising the need to reinforce safety measures.

In a circular released on November 21, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) alerted its members that major earthquakes often carry the risk of significant aftershocks, which could endanger both lives and property.

‘Consequently, it is crucial for us to remain vigilant in this matter,’ the notice cautioned.

Given that a substantial number of workers are employed in garment factories, the BGMEA highlighted the importance of enhancing the structural safety of these buildings.

Factory facilities house a variety of machinery that generates constant vibrations, while critical areas such as lifts, boilers, generators, and sub-stations, if compromised, could lead to serious incidents at any time, the statement explained.

Such damage could potentially injure large numbers of staff, the BGMEA warned, recommending that structural or civil engineers immediately inspect the premises to detect any cracks or defects that might worsen during aftershocks or future earthquakes.

It also advised that lifts, boiler rooms, generator rooms, and sub-stations be checked by qualified professionals.

On Friday morning (November 21), a significant earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck Bangladesh, killing around a dozen people and injuring many more.

The nation experienced another tremor on November 22 evening at approximately 6:06 pm, registering 3.7 on the Richter scale, following an earlier quake at 10:36 am, which measured 3.3.
