Bangladesh Bank is set to release newly designed banknotes in denominations of Tk 1000, Tk 50 and Tk 20 today (June 1).
The notes, which bear the signature of the central bank’s Governor, Ahsan H Mansur, will initially be issued from the bank’s Motijheel office, with distribution expanding to other regional offices in the coming days.
According to Bangladesh Bank officials, approximately Tk 200 crore will be released through 11 commercial banks.
While the release will begin on Sunday, the public will be able to access the new notes from June 2.
The participating banks include Sonali Bank, Janata Bank, Agrani Bank, Pubali Bank, Uttara Bank, Rupali Bank, Dutch-Bangla Bank, Islami Bank, Al-Arafah Islami Bank, BRAC Bank and Eastern Bank.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernise the country’s currency under a new series titled Historic and Archaeological Architecture of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Bank earlier announced plans to issue redesigned notes in all denominations — Tk 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10, 5 and 2 — featuring themes that reflect the nation’s architectural and cultural heritage.
The newly introduced Tk 1000, 50 and 20 notes are the first in the series to be issued with the current governor’s signature.
Bangladesh Bank has confirmed that all previously issued banknotes and coins will remain in circulation and retain their legal tender status.
In addition, to meet the interests of collectors, non-exchangeable specimen notes of the newly designed Tk 1000, 50 and 20 denominations have also been printed.
These collector’s items will be available for purchase at fixed prices from the Taka Museum in Mirpur, Dhaka.
