Bangladesh achieves 230 green factories with new addition

Another apparel and textile factory in Bangladesh has recently been awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the US Green Building Council, increasing the country’s total number of LEED-certified green factories to 230.

The newly certified factory is the Cotton Field BD Ltd, located in Tongi, Gazipur. The factory achieved Platinum certification, scoring 86 out of 110.

According to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, out of 230 LEED-certified green factories, 92 have attained platinum ratings, 124 have achieved gold certifications, 10 have received silver and 4 hold basic certification.

Bangladesh’s recent advancements in sustainable practices have positioned the country as home to 62 of the world’s top 100 highest-rated Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified factories.

Among these, 9 of the top 10 and 18 of the top 20 are located in the country. One factory, S.M. Sourcing Limited, has set a new benchmark as the highest-rated LEED green factory in the world, achieving a score of 106.

In the global ranking of the top 100 LEED green factories, the representation from other countries includes 3 from China, 7 from India, 3 from Vietnam, 8 from Pakistan, 4 from Taiwan, 4 from Sri Lanka, 2 from Myanmar, and 1 each from Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Paraguay, Romania, and the United Arab Emirates.

BGMEA administrator Md Anwar Hossain congratulated garment industry entrepreneurs on their commitment to eco-friendly industrialization and their significant progress in this area.

He said that this achievement underscored Bangladesh’s potential to become a global leader in sustainable production.

The newly certified Cotton Field BD Ltd Admin Building is a sister concern of the Mondol Group, a prominent name in Bangladesh’s readymade garment industry.

According to the company profile, Cotton Field BD Ltd produces 40 per cent ladies’, 30 per cent men’s, 20 per cent children’s and 10 per cent baby items, emphasising continuous improvement, innovative customer service, and long-term partnerships.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, awarded by the US Green Building Council, is earned by projects that meet prerequisites and credits addressing carbon, energy, water, waste, transportation, materials, health and indoor environmental quality.

Platinum certification, the highest category, requires projects to earn more than 80 points out of 110, while gold certification ranges from 60 to 79 points, and silver certification from 50 to 59 points.
