Preparations underway for third round of US-Bangladesh tariff talks

Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin said on Monday that preparations were underway for the third round of negotiations with the United States on reciprocal tariffs.

He expressed confidence that Bangladesh would be able to maintain its trade with the US market using its current capabilities and added that he expected the US to confirm the schedule for the upcoming talks within the week.

The adviser made these remarks at a press briefing held at the Ministry of Commerce’s conference room in the Bangladesh Secretariat, following a meeting with senior ministry officials and leaders of the business community.

‘We hope the US will set tariffs at a rational level. Preparations are underway for the third phase of negotiations with the US on reciprocal tariffs, with a formal request already made for a timeline,’ Bashir said.

He added that he expects the United States to confirm the schedule for the next round of discussions within the coming week.

The business community has voiced satisfaction over the progress of negotiations with the United States concerning the reciprocal tariff imposed by US President Donald J Trump.

Representatives emphasised that the government is treating these tariff talks as a top priority.

The Ministry of Commerce organised the meeting to gather input from economists, business leaders, exporters, and traders as part of preparations for the upcoming round of negotiations with the United States Trade Representative (USTR) aimed at reducing tariffs on Bangladeshi exports.

At the briefing, Sk Bashir Uddin reiterated his optimism about Bangladesh’s position in the US market and stressed the importance of a fair and balanced tariff regime.

Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman highlighted the seriousness of the issue, noting its significant implications for Bangladesh’s economy.

He assured that the government is working at the highest level to address the matter.

‘Some steps have already been taken, and further actions will follow. We have consulted with stakeholders and gathered their views. We are prepared to address any issues that arise through dialogue with the United States,’ he said.

US President Donald Trump recently announced the imposition of a 35 per cent tariff on Bangladeshi goods, effective from August 1.

This move has prompted the ongoing negotiations between the two countries aimed at securing a more favourable tariff arrangement.
